Hundreds of ravers infuriated the residents of a Norfolk village after police were unable to stop an all-night illegal party on Saturday.

Police were alerted to the rave on private land at Aldeby near Beccles by members of the public at 12.40am. But by the time they arrived nearly 100 cars had parked up on the land and the rave was in full swing. At just before 2am the landowner blocked access to his land using his own vehicle and police tried to turn cars that were still arriving away.

But even torrential rain didn't stop the party and in total an estimated 600 people danced the night away - turning the field into a quagmire. The group finally left at lunchtime on Sunday. In the last year Norfolk Police has taken a more proactive approach towards illegal-raves which has seen three tackled in the last month alone.

Last weekend police confiscated thousands of pounds worth of equipment from a rave at North Creake near Fakenham, and earlier in July two raves at Wretham near Thetford and Thurning near Reepham were closed down as part of the forces crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

But police were too late to deal with this one and could only wait for the revellers to leave of their own accord. Inspector Andy McArdle said: “Most raves we try to stop before they happen by carrying-out observations and intelligence gathering. “If a rave does start that we hadn't known about we try to stop access to the land as quickly as possible and try and make contact with the organisers.

“But in this case when we arrived the rave was well established and with resources directed towards public order in Norwich and Yarmouth on Saturday night we simply did not have the man-power to stop it.”
