Cruel son: I was bored

By Dean Herbert

A CRUEL drunk cut off his goldfish's tail then threw the maimed creature back in its tank.'

Kenneth Grindlay's horrified mum came home to find the fish floating helplessly in the water and a bloody pair of scissors lying on the kitchen worktop. Grindlay, 20, told police he did it because he was bored. The fish had to be put down. Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard how Grindlay started drinking after being left alone at the family home in Rosyth, Fife, for the afternoon.

He then grabbed the six-year-old goldfish from its tank and hacked off its tail. Grindlay's mum Shona shopped him to police. Azrah Yousaf, prosecuting, told the court: 'When the police arrived the fish was still alive but they noticed it wasn't very active in the tank.' The officers arranged for the fish to be taken to the vet but it was too badly hurt to be saved.

Mr Yousaf said: 'The vets described it as one of the worst injuries they had ever seen.' Grindlay told police: 'I cut the fin off. I was a bit drunk. I was just bored.' He pleaded guilty by letter last month to cruelly ill-treating the fish and causing it unnecessary suffering. Sentence was deferred until yesterday for a psychiatric report. But sheriff Ian Simpson was told it was not ready because Grindlay had failed to co-operate with doctors.

Defence lawyer Alexander Flett said his client had recently been held for 72 hours under the Mental Health Act after a bout of bizarre behaviour unrelated to the fish attack. Sheriff Simpson deferred sentence until the end of the month and warned Grindlay he would be held in jail if he did not co-operate with the preparation of the report. Grindlay refused to comment as he left court.
