MOSCOW, August 3 (Itar-Tass) - Starting from September Russia lifts a ban on cattle imports from Finland, imposed in 2003, the head of the Russian Federal Service for Sanitary and Fito-Sanitary Control told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

Cattle supplies from Finland were banned in May 2003 after cases of mad cow disease had been registered in that country. That is why, “Before opening our market we must make sure that import supplies of cattle meet Russia’s veterinary demands,” Sergei Dankvert said.

He also said that cattle from Finland had been mainly supplied in the northern part of Russia before the ban was imposed.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to lift restrictions on cattle imports from Finland. The president spoke after talks with Finnish President Tarja Halonen.
